Quick Tip: Enterprise Vault Retention Folders

EV Retention FoldersAs storage administrators, we are frequently faced with the daunting task of maintaining an end user’s home directory. With the potential of having thousands of end users this can become an almost impossible task because there is no consistency from one user folder to the next. Have no fear! The Enterprise Vault file system archiving component offers an extremely flexible feature that will automatically create and maintain a consistent folder hierarchy in each end user’s home directory. Additionally, policies can be assigned to those folders to ensure that corporate compliance is adhered to. This is a very flexible and powerful feature!

Step-by-Step:

  1. A template is first created using the Enterprise Vault administration console. The template can be a single folder or a hierarchy of folders that are given descriptive names.
  2. Next, an archiving and retention policy are created and associated with the folders.
  3. After the folders are created an end user must simply save a document in the corresponding folder and the item will be archived per the policy settings.
